WHAT IS VGAFIX ?
VGAFIX is a TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) utility. It is a BIOS
(Basic Input Output System) interceptor that redirect TWO specific
BIOS calls to modified BIOS calls.
VGAFIX was primarily designed to rectify probelms associated with the
Orchid Designer VGA card. These problems are associated with the
palette reading and updating functions. However, there is a distinct
probability that these DAC read/update problems are not limited to the
Orchid Designer VGA card but to other "Tseng Labs" chip based cards.
WHAT WILL VGAFIX "FIX" ?
VGAFIX will rectify MOST problems that involve DAC read/update BIOS
calls.
Symptoms of these problems include:
"My 'CAMERA' or screen 'CAPture' utility captures the screen data
correctly but the colors are all mixed up, all black and white,
or seem to have the default hardware colors.
"My 'CAMERA' or screen 'CAPture' utility CRASHES OR HANGS
whenever I try to capture pictures with 256 colors in VGA or MCGA
graphics mode."
"Whenever, I try to change the colors in my 'paint' or 'graphics'
program, nothing happens or unpredictable results happen
(including hanging or crashing my system)"
"Sometimes, when I try to change the colors in some of my 'paint'
or 'graphics' programs, nothing happens or unpredictable results
happen (including hanging or crashing my system); this seems to
happen only when I am changing individual colors not when I load
a new palette or change the whole palette."
"My 'paint' or 'graphics' program works on other machines with
different cards but doesn't work on mine."
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
If you are a programmer, then the listing in VGAFIX.ASM will be
of interest to you. As you will see, the TSR intercepts and
redirects INT10H (AH=10H, AL=10H) and (AH=10H, AL=15H) calls with
modified INT10H (AH=10H, AL=12H) and (AH=10H, AL=17H).
You can use this source and try other BIOS redirections which you
suspect may be causing problems in your specific card. Please
let us know if you have found and/or corrected a new bug in
FEEDBACK.doc so that we can distribute a wide range of BIOS
correction programs to benefit all.
WHAT PROGRAMS USE THIS BIOS CALLS ?
We are not sure which programs use these calls. As BIOS calls
they are assumed to work on all "compatible" VGA/MCGA cards since
they are original PS/2 BIOS calls. Unfortunately, BIOS chips
are continually being updated and not everyone has the latest
versions.
In the "Shareware" market, all the programs we (the authors)
developed use these calls and many Orchid Designer VGA card users
have reported problems using our programs. These programs are
VGACAD, VGAPRN, BLD2GIF, VGACAP and EGA2VGA and can be located in
various Bulletin Board Services (BBSs) or on CompuServe.
PLEASE REPORT YOUR TEST RESULTS ON FEEDBACK.DOC; YOU WILL NOT ONLY
HELP US TO HELP YOU BUT NUMEROUS USERS USING YOUR CARD OR THEIR FAMILY
OF CARDS. IT IS ALSO A REQUIREMENT TO LEGALLY USE THIS PROGRAM !
